The management of endodontic emergencies is an important part of a dental practice. It can often be a disruptive part of the day for the clinician and staff, but it is an invaluable solution for the distressed patient.
Endodontic emergencies can be classified into 3 main types based on the time of their occurrence related to the treatment (pre, intra and post treatment phases). The cause of dental pain is typically from caries, deep or defective restorations, fractures, or trauma. Particular note should be made of any disorders which may affect the differential diagnosis of dental pain, such as myofascial pain, neurological disorders, vascular pain syndromes and maxillary sinus disorders.
In these emergencies circumstances, efficient methodical diagnosis is imperative for a treatment plan with immediate results and predictable long-term prognosis for the teeth involved. In this presentation an overview of the types of endodontic emergencies, systematic diagnostic methods and treatment alternatives for successful results will be presented.
