Painless root canal treatment: does it exist?

The management of pain during root canal treatment is important. Local anesthesia may be challenging in some circumstances. This problem appears to be more pronounced with inferior alveolar nerve block administration and especially in cases of irreversible pulpitis.

The lecture will give an overview of basic mechanisms of action of local anesthetics, discuss causes of inadequate pulpal anesthesia and suggest strategies for efficient pain control during endodontic treatment.

Orofacial pain can be difficult to diagnose. The International Classification for Orofacial Pain (ICOP) will make it easier to find a diagnosis so the right treatment can be chosen.
